ABSTRACT
Due to the recent development of physiologic study methods, along with morphologic and molecular biologic studies, the understanding about synaptic transmission between cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve terminal has been significantly improved. Auditory system has very delicate mechanism that can differentiate the frequency, loudness, and time difference, and localization of the sound. This mechanism is found not only in central auditory system but also at the very end level of the cochlea. The synapse in auditory hair cells has very unique morphologic and functional characteristics compare to other synapse in various nerve tissue. The author will describe the characteristics of the synapse transmission between cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve.
Key Words: Cochlea, Auditory hair cell, Synaptic transmission.
