ABSTRACT |
The present study examined auditory performance before and after cochlear implantation in three school-aged children with hearing and
listening tests in order to investigate factors affecting auditory performance after cochlear implantation and the importance of auditory
rehabilitation. After cochlear implantation, subject 1 had better auditory performance than subjects 1 and 2 to some extent afterwards.
In particular listening tests of one syllable (36%) and two syllables (52%) with auditory-only (AO) word tests for subject 1
were better than subject 2 (16%, 24%) and subject 3 (24%, 8%) respectively. The reasons for good auditory performance in subject
1 were as follows. Subject 1 already had good auditory performance before cochlear implantation, and had received aural rehabilitation
for a longer period (4 years six months) than subjects 2 and 3 (2 years eight and ten months). The age of cochlear implantation in
subject 1 was earlier than subject 2 and subject 3. The results of this study suggested that school-aged children with cochlear implants
should receive auditory rehabilitation including auditory training continuously in order to train their residual hearing and adjust themselves
to the cochlear implant. and psycho-social counseling and hearing-related information should be provided to their families,
friends and teachers. |
