ABSTRACT
Authors tried to comparatively analyze between word recognition scores (WRSs), sentence recognition scores (SRSs) and sound quality evaluations according to wide-band telephone speech (WTS) and narrow-band telephone speech (NTS), with normal hearing (NH) and hearing impaired (HI) in quiet and noisy situations, using commercialized telephones on the market. The analysis was to determine that WTS, telephone speech of extended frequency bandwidth ranged in 100 ~ 7,000 Hz, contribute to WRS, SRS and sound qualities, compared to NTS. The results of this study were 1) in both the NH and HI groups, WRSs of WTS were higher than those of NTS. 2) Only in the HI group, SRSs were different between WTS and NTS. In a noisy situation rather than a quiet situation, SRSs of WTS were higher than those of NTS. 3) In both the NH and HI groups, the sound qualities of WTS were better than those of NTS. In this study, WRSs in both the NH and HI groups, and SRSs only in the HI group were found to be affected by the type of the frequency band of telephone speech. With industrial development and aging population, the HI population is rising, and communication over telephones in diverse environments is increasing. In this context, in order to promote feasible and effective communication of HI as well as NH, extension of telephone speech frequency bandwidth should be essential.
