ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prediction interval of word recognition score (WRS) using Korean standard monosyllabic word lists for adults (KS-MWL-A). Twenty-three adults were included in this study. Four lists of KS-MWL-A were presented to each subject using a compact disc. WRSs were obtained from 3 test conditions which controlled the number of words (10, 25, 50). Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and paired t-test. Standard error of the mean (SE) and standard error of the measurement (SEM) were calculated for 5 ranges of WRS to calculate 95% confidence interval (CI) and 95% predictive interval (PI). The results were as follows. First, the correlation coefficients of WRS test-retest were high for all test conditions. Second, the difference between test and retest means was not significantly different for all three test conditions (paired t-test, p>.05). Third, 95% CIs were narrow for 25 and 50 test words. However, the CI of 10 test words was considerably wider than those of 25 and 50 test words. Finally, 95% PIs were generally wider than 95% CIs and got narrower as the number of test words increased. These results indicate that WRS test using the recorded voice of KS-MWL-A is reliable for 25 and 50 test words. The data of 95% CIs and 95% PIs for each number of test words and each range of WRS may be useful to indicate the significance of difference in retest of WRS. It is recommended, however, that CIs as well as PIs be recalculated based on more data before fully using for clinical purposes.
